Since 2022, Reduce Waste Chicago has diverted more than 60,000 pounds of material from the landfill by connecting with and inspiring thousands of Chicagoans to dispose of items responsibly. This includes more than 10,000 pounds of string lights through our Holiday Lights Collection campaign, which has grown to 35 locations in 18 wards last year and has the potential to expand to all 50 wards this winter. We've raised awareness of product lifecycles, the hazards of single-use plastics and reducing waste by reducing consumption with elementary, high school and college students through classroom presentations and collaborative collection events for the school and nearby communities. As part of the Coalition for Plastic Reduction, we shared information and supported legislation that amended Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines to allow customers to bring their own containers for restaurant takeout and bulk foods, which has reduced the use of plastic takeout containers.
