Acerca de esta organización

Tutskwat Oqawtoynani, started organizing cleanups as early as 2016 due to the excessive accumulation of trash on the sides of the mesa. This trash covers up ancient foot trails and ceremonial pathways surrounding the mesa that served as crucial routes for thousands of years. Sakhongvaiya, (Green Tobacco Standing in a Row) a prominent Hopi elder, Leon A. Nuvayestewa Sr., declared that if "no one was going to do anything about the trash, he would." This declaration marked the beginning of our efforts to clean our sacred home. Tutskwat Oqawtoynani serves a direct population of 1,985 individuals across three distinct villages in First Mesa, Arizona, where our focused efforts on waste management are centered. This initiative significantly benefits the community, as First Mesa serves as a central location for year-round ceremonies. To date we have cleared over 160 tons of trash off the sides of our mesa home. Tutskwat has done their best to keep grant money local, we've been able to funnel thousands to local, Hopi/Tewa led businesses, artists, the Hopi Tribe Solid Waste Landfill Program as we've picked up the bill for landfill fees for all three villages located on First Mesa.
