Sharing Excess

Sharing Excess is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that redistributes surplus food to people who need it. Nearly 40% of the food produced in the U.S. goes to waste while 47 million Americans face food insecurity. There is no shortage of food. There is a shortage of access.

Sharing Excess was started by Evan Ehlers and Victoria Wilson as college students. In 2018, Evan realized he had 50 unused meal swipes at Drexel University and donated them to people who needed food in his community, inspiring the idea to rescue excess food on a much larger scale. Together, Evan and Victoria have grown Sharing Excess into one of the largest food rescue organizations in the world, rescuing more than 120 million pounds of food each year.

Their approach pairs wholesale food rescue with innovative technology to create a scalable model that now operates from Philadelphia and New York to Los Angeles and beyond. Sharing Excess works with more than 2,000 nonprofit partners and estimates that it helps feed over eight million people annually. Notably, they have collaborated with the world's largest influencer, MrBeast, garnering hundreds of millions of views and bringing unprecedented awareness to the issue of food waste globally. Their ultimate vision is to one day close America's meal gap by sharing excess food. Learn more at sharingexcess.com or on instagram @sharingexcess.
