Buffalo Field Campaign

About this Organization

The last wild migratory Buffalo in the continental US spend their summer months safely inside Yellowstone National Park. But in winter, the Yellowstone Herds must migrate to lower elevations for forage. In doing so they cross the Park's man-made boundary, instantly meeting with the State of Montana's zero-tolerance policy for their species. Each year, Yellowstone's Buffalo are harassed, quarantined and slaughtered by the hundreds.

Buffalo Field Campaign has the honor and privilege of standing in defense of this iconic species. Our field operations document all aspects of a management plan that limits herd size instead of increasing it to meet the Park's ideal carrying capacity of 10,000 individuals.

BFC builds relationships with Native & non-Native people, advocates for co-existence with the Buffalo, and promotes tribal co-stewardship of the Yellowstone herds. We share scientific research and report what's happening in the migratory corridor to the public and media.

The lifeblood of our campaign is the energy of volunteers, interns, coordinators and Board Members in the field. Without your support, we could not bear witness to the Buffalos' struggles, power, and persistence.
