Today, that work feels especially urgent. Federal policies are placing growing pressure on environmental protections and the communities already most impacted by pollution, climate change, and environmental inequities. Too often, these stories receive little or no attention from legacy media.

At Red Canary Magazine, we go deeper. We investigate what is happening, listen closely to the people living with the consequences, and document stories that strengthen public understanding, accountability, and an informed democracy. It is a privilege to do this work—and a responsibility we take seriously.

Our Story

Red Canary Magazine was created to fill a crucial gap in journalism: telling urgent environmental justice stories with integrity, depth, and impact. We believe that powerful storytelling, rooted in truth-seeking independent journalism, can drive meaningful change vital to our democracy.

The name “Red Canary” is symbolic. The canary represents both vigilance and joy, a reminder to raise our voices, sustain communities, and inspire action. And to sing.

Our contributors have written for The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and many more national and international publications. We are award-winning journalists, filmmakers, photographers, poets, and artists committed to transforming information into wisdom and wisdom into action, inspiring positive change and responsible stewardship of our planet, our home, and our communities.

We believe journalism is a civic duty, with a responsibility to inform, engage, and challenge; to uncover what’s hidden, amplify what matters, and hold power to account. We tell the stories that matter without fear, favor, or compromise.

Our mission is clear: We report the urgent environmental stories of our time in ways that provoke discussion, inspire reflection, and speak to the times with compelling storytelling that is timeless. We amplify the voices of those whose survival, well-being, and freedoms are on the line. With compelling storytelling and rigorous reporting, we aim to not just document change, but drive it.
