Sovereign Energy

A nonprofit organization

Sovereign Energy builds the individual and collective power of Southwest Pueblos and Tribes to lead the way toward a just, interdependent, and sustainable energy future.

Sovereign Energy was founded in 2021 recognizing Indigenous voices and leadership as paramount to a just, equitable, and clean energy future. The legacies of energy extraction, exploitation, and political barriers to tribal energy sovereignty continue to disrupt and cause harm to Indigenous communities and Tribal Nation building. Sovereign Energy works across the Southwest with Tribal governments and Indigenous Communities to change this paradigm, foster a regenerative energy future, create meaningful action toward climate goals, and ignite reparations for injustices caused by harmful energy development practices. The five pillars of our strategic initiatives include (1) renewable energy education; (2) Tribal capacity building (3) policy & regulatory advocacy; and (4) cultural resource protection.

As our organization engages with Tribal leaders, community members, state and federal agencies, and other stakeholders, it is quickly evident that there is high demand for our services. We operate to support Tribal Nation building and Indigenous livelihoods through: creating energy-sovereign and self-sufficient Tribal Nations; reducing electricity costs for families, elders, and those living on fixed incomes; reducing exposure to harmful pollutants and alleviating climate-related health crises; building Indigenous professionals within the clean energy workforce and industry; advocating for the protection of sacred landscapes and resources; and supporting Tribal clean energy projects to advance Indigenous economies, fund community programs and services, and create healthier environments.

We believe Indigenous ingenuity, collaboration, and community-led solutions are key to healing and transformative impact. Sovereign Energy is led and operated by Indigenous women. We aim to uplift the legacies of Indigenous stewardship, traditional knowledge, and respect for the natural energy sources, land, and sacred sites that have sustained us for generations. We work in partnership with several Tribal Nations, Tribal entities, local and national Indigenous-led and non-profit organizations, state legislative and congressional leadership, and environmental NGOs.

Through strategic partnerships, capacity-building initiatives, and advocacy efforts, Sovereign Energy seeks to empower Southwest Pueblos and Tribes, enabling them to assert their sovereignty and leadership in shaping a just, interdependent, and sustainable energy future. By centering Indigenous voices and values within the renewable energy transition, we aim to address the legacies of injustice and uphold the rights of Indigenous peoples. Through collaborative action and community-led initiatives, we envision a future where Tribal energy sovereignty is recognized and respected, contributing to broader social and environmental justice goals.
