Steve's quest to Save the Scenic Santa Ritas

The Santa Rita Mountains in the Sky Islands of the Sonoran Desert are sacred for me.  I grew up there, rode horseback and hiked their quiet peaceful trails, and often camped high in their peaks, year after year as winter transitioned to spring.  I have rested alongside their crystal steams and been soothed by the soft murmur of running water.  They are the cradle for my poetry, the site for my books, and where I retreat as an elder, during these most challenging times, to reclaim the connection of my soul to all creation.  

But all that is at risk.   Thirty years ago,  a foreign mining company began planning a series of huge open pit mines in the heart of the Santa Ritas.  

Fortunately, a group of volunteers organized "Save the Scenic Santa Ritas."  I joined them!  We've held the foreign mining companies at bay.   Working together through the courts, we've won key cases. But, like whack-a-mole, the mining companies persist.  It's a marathon...and I believe that this fall we may be nearing the crucial final lap.  With the support of elected officials, and an ever-growing group of collaborators, we may be able to finally win this battle this year!
