Heartland Trial at BTA

Benefiting Reap Goodness

Created by cyndi ruehl

Fundraiser Story

The Heartland Trial project, established on five acres of Sonoran desert at Boyce Thompson Arboretum, seeks innovative solutions for food production in the face of rising temperatures and dwindling water resources. Initiated in 2022 by Reap Goodness, its mission is to create a regenerative desert agroforest that demonstrates resilient food production for ‘food desert’ communities. Drawing from indigenous farming traditions and water-wise plant varieties, the project’s team of volunteers has started with tall pot seedlings and a monsoon garden. We have identified 25 edible and medicinal plant species that can be harvested and used onsite. Now, with only the groundwork laid, the team is preparing to broaden their fenced gardens, plant more native trees, and boost educational outreach. Contributions will support the next phase of development, which includes installing a supplemental water storage and distribution system, planting various desert edible plants, and educational programs.
