Sky Island Alliance
About this Organization
The Sky Island region of southern Arizona and northern Sonora, Mexico is distinguished by isolated forested mountain ranges surrounded by grasslands and desert. This area is recognized by Conservation International as one of only 35 global diversity hot spots as it harbors the highest diversity of mammals, birds, bees, and ants anywhere in the mainland U.S. For almost 35 years, Sky Island Alliance has led binational efforts to protect and restore the diversity of life and lands across the Sky Island region, using a range of programs including community science, restoration, advocacy and education.
Based in Tucson, with satellite offices in Canenea and Monteczuma, Sonora, our staff of 12 employees and nine paid interns work across public and private lands in the region. We work in partnership with federal and state agencies and other non-profits to conduct scientific studies and use the data to guide conservation conservation and restoration activities on the ground. Our efforts are amplified by the contribution of hundreds of volunteers annually who help us keep water flowing, native plants thriving, and wildlife moving safely between the mountains of this special region.
